How the Heart and Brain Connect

Take a close look at this enlarged heart! Notice how it continues to beat even after being explanted (removed) from it’s owner! The heart is far more than a simple pump. It is, in fact, a highly complex, self-organized information processing center with its own functional “brain” that communicates with and influences the cranial brain via neurological communication (nervous system), biochemical communication (hormones), biophysical communication (pulse wave) and energetic communication (electromagnetic fields). The way our heart beats (heart rate variability or heart rhythms) impacts our mental clarity, creativity, emotional balance and personal effectiveness (for example: being stressed causes the heart to race). What’s most intriguing is the dramatic positive changes that occur when techniques are applied to increase coherence in the rhythmic patterns of heart rate variability. These include physical exercise; yoga; shifts your perception towards positivity in order to reduce stress and deal with difficult situations more effectively (sublimation); and savoring positive emotions and happy memories! Creating recurring habits of these exercises can profoundly influence our heart’s rhythms (even at rest)! This inherently can change the way we perceive the world, how our heart responds to it and it also impacts each of our body’s major organs! It is an interesting concept that our heart functions as a dynamic and reflective piece of our inner emotional states ad stress levels! Since our intelligence and awareness can impact our heart rate variability (or heart rhythms), let’s make the intentions to be mindful of the beautiful symphony that plays in accordance to our heart strings.
